A Man on the Inside (2024)
[series]
An old engineer is deep in the dumps, but his zest for life unexpectedly returns when he’s hired by a private detective. His mission? Go undercover in a retirement home to find a missing necklace.
Sound interesting? Not really. On its own, the premise doesn’t grab you. But then you see the name behind it: Michael Schur. Yes, that Michael Schur—the genius who gave us The Good Place, Brooklyn 99, and all those Offices, Parks, and Recreation. If you love his work, you’ll spot plenty of familiar faces (a bit of fan service), but the real star here is his signature mix of humor and chaos—with a twist.
Even back in The Good Place, Schur started weaving in sentimental notes, digging deeper than, say, Brooklyn 99. Here, he goes all in. The show is a reflection on past mistakes and the joys of the present. It’s all wrapped in a slow, gentle pace that matches the setting of a retirement home, creating a kind of magic.
Dementia runs as a common thread throughout the story. I remember how my grandfather faded away from that cruel disease—it was brutal. So yeah, I teared up more than once watching this. Schur hit the strings of my soul, the bastard, but wrapped it all in a blanket of humor and guided me gently into the temple of humanity.
This guy’s a genius. Nolan can fuck off.
